5 Essential Steps in Recovery from Binge Eating
5 stages of binge eating recovery
Each stage requires different techniques to help my clients move on to the next step,
Here’s a breakdown of each phase with some common thought processes around each one
STAGE 1: FOOD IS TO BLAME
I don’t need help, I just need to stick to my diet and I will beat my cravings
I feel overwhelmed by the disabling feeling of binge eating
It’s sugar’s fault that I keep binge eating
I don’t need anybody’s help
I feel out of control around food, I must follow a strict eating plan not to get tempted
(side note: there is also a preoccupation with weight, shape, and appearance)
STAGE 2: I MIGHT HAVE AN ISSUE
I understand that binge eating is damaging to my mental and physical health.
I’m open to discussing some options but I’m not ready to change.
I’m ready to change but I’m too scared Stel will judge me.
I don’t think I want to stop binge eating
STAGE 3: CHANGE IS POSSIBLE
I’m ready to change but I don’t know how.
I’m researching all about recovery on Google.
There has to me more to life than obsessing over food and my body 24/7.
(Side note: The danger here is that there is a lot of misinformation on recovery on the internet)
STAGE 4: LET’S DO THIS !!
I can see the benefits of this way of living.
I’m open to trying new ways of healing.
I’m ready to face my fears as I know it will be worth it.
I have booked a call with Stel , this is the right step.
STAGE 5: I’M PRACTICING NEW BEHAVIOURS EVERY DAY
I successfully manage my urges.
I use both healthy self-care and coping skills.
I understand my cravings without having to eat.
I know how to nourish myself when I feel emotional.
I’m able to mindfully indulge in the odd piece of cake or chocolate.
Food does not have a hold on me.
I can trust myself around food.
I’m binge free or on my way to becoming binge free.
Which stage are you in right now (1, 2, 3, 4 or 5?)
